    Preventing Fraud Starts with You

Identity theft and scams are on the rise in Canada. Stay safe by checking links, keeping passwords private, monitoring your accounts, and verifying anything that feels off. A few simple steps can help you be prepared and proactive.

    Fraudulent phone calls

We love to talk to our members! But we will never call to ask for personal or financial information such as; account numbers, member ID, PAC/PIN or passwords, or credit card number information. Never give out this information over the phone.

If this happens, here are steps you can take:

    • Ask for the full name and phone number of the caller
    • Ast to book an appointment directly with Valley Credit Union
    • Call / Notfiy your branch immediately: 902-538-4510

Online, email, and text phishing fraud

Phishing emails and texts try to trick you into giving personal info or clicking harmful links and they can slip past junk filters. Banks and credit unions never ask for account, credit card, or PIN/PAC numbers this way.

    Stay safe:

    • Don't share info or click suspicious links (hover over the link to see where it takes you)
    • Go directly to the source or website instead
    • Log into your account (CRA, Bank, Credit Union, Credit Card) to view all messages or statements
    • Watch for bad grammar, urgent alerts, or "too good to be true" promises
    • When in doubt, delete the message and call your branch

    Identity theft

Identity theft happens when criminals get your personal banking information through fraudulent calls, letters, emails, or even rifling through your garbage. Scammers use this information to access your accounts, make purchases, or apply for credit in your name. Valley Credit Union and our network of credit unions go to great lengths to protect and secure your personal and financial data.

Common tactics thieves use may include:

    • Fraudulent calls, letters, texts, or emails asking for personal banking information
    • Posing as landlords, employers, or other trusted contacts
    • Stealing your wallet, mail, or personal documents
    • Searching through garbage
    • Hacking unsecured websites
    • Phishing messages (text, email, or social media)

Steps to protect yourself from identity theft:

    • Sign new credit cards and keep them safe
    • Shred sensitive documents before discarding
    • Review statements regularly and report discrepancies immediately
    • Keep your PAC/PINs and passwords private
    • Check your credit report annually for free via Equifax or TransUnion
    • Report any theft to police, your financial institution, credit bureaus, and service providers

Report fraud or cybercrime online, whether you are the victim, were targeted or are a witness.
